Upgrade complete.

September 1st, 2008

Good day,

the server upgrade is complete! Our new hardware is running very smoothly (and fast ;) ) and the most important services are running, again (namely the Jabberd, Mail daemons, IRCd, HTTPd).

In case of any errors, please contact the administration under stefan [ät] boxbox.org. We hope you continue enjoying your stay.

Regards,
Stefan

Server upgrade ordered

August 29th, 2008

Hey,

the server upgrade has just been ordered. That means that the new server will be available within the next 3 days (because of the coming weekend). So if you’ll lose your connection, you’ll know why. Please also note that you shouldn’t do important changes to your Jabber account, like massively renaming or sorting your contact list, since the last backup has just been made.

See you then,
Tank

Good day!

Today we’ll order the new server! This means that BoxBox could be down for some hours today or tomorrow. Also make sure that you don’t change anything important, because BoxBox is freezed, i.e. the last backup has just been made.

Please check this page regularly to know when BoxBox is back.

See you on the other side! ;)

New server and donations

August 17th, 2008

Hello BoxBox users!

We decided to upgrade the hardware of the BoxBox server. So far, it has been a small Pentium 733 with 256 megs of RAM and a fairly small harddisk. Since the server is running a lot of services, and will be using a lot more in the future, we’ll rent a better one.

Currently we’re talking to the hoster to be able to switch. If everything will be fine, BoxBox will be running on an Intel Pentium DualCore with 2 GHz each, 2 gigs of RAM and a huge 250 gigs harddisk drive. We think this will ensure great power and stability in the future — also with more projects, which are already in the pipeline.

BoxBox services will always be free of charge, and mostly free of ads (at least services like Jabber, E-mail and webhosting). But of course running this server generates costs, which are payed by us privately. If you want to support BoxBox, you can voluntarily donate a small amount of money. Surely we would publish your name in case of a donation on this website if you wish to. If you’ve got a PayPal account, you can use the button at the bottom of this posting to donate. If not, please contact the server administration for other ways of donating.

Regarding to the server upgrade, you’ll get further information. We will not upgrade without announcing it at first. And of course, we’ll do our best to ensure that no data-loss will happen.

Feel free to tell us your suggestions, feelings or recommendations. Feedback is always appreciated!

BoxBox on-line, again!

August 13th, 2008

We had a serious issue with the server the last day. A reboot happened (I won’t explain why, because this would result in endless laughter forever, I swear..) and the system didn’t load the networking module anymore at bootup. This is fairly the worst situation ever when you’re some hundred kilometres away from the machine and can’t “just sit down in front of it to do some hacking“.

Fortunately we could manage to get access to the server directly and were able to reload the module. So BoxBox is working without any errors again, no data got lost.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may has caused and hope you still enjoy your stay. ;-)

Today we have updated the BoxBox’ Jabber software ejabberd to version 2.0.1 (newest). Thanks to the clean code and compatibility of ejabberd, the upgrade wasn’t a problem. The whole database and configuration could just be transferred and didn’t need to be altered. This also means that some new features of ejabberd 2.0.1 are not yet enabled. We’re on this and will of course drop some lines here when things change.

We hope you’ll continue having fun with Jabber at BoxBox. Feedback is always welcome!

We’re proud to announce that the registration at the BoxBox Jabber server is open, again. Well, not exactly as before. Instead of using the Inband Registration of Jabber, we’re using a very simple registration formular. BoxBox is interested in humans, not spambots or one-time users. So, if you’re really interested in an account, feel free to register. If not, please choose another server. The link to the registration can be found on the Jabber page and here.

If you’ve got suggestions or recommandations, please use the comment feature of this blog. Thank you!
